Saranta Kolones is located north of Paphos harbour and is the ruins of an ancient castle, Saranta Kolones means castle of forty columns which goes to show that the castle was originally built on forty columns, these columns were made of granite. As history goes the castle was built by Lusignans during the Frankish rule in the thirteenth century, although the first castle to be built was the Byzantine castle which was built in 7th century A.D to protect from Arab raids the Saranta Kolones was built on the Byzantine castle, however the castle was destroyed by earthquake in 1222 and what we see today are the ruins of that castle, a trip to the ruins of Saranta Kolones can be lot of fun, families can enjoy exploring the ruins together, though Care needs to be taken with children and elderly people as the ruins have steep stairs with no supports.
